What is Lomotil?

Lomotil (diphenoxylate and atropine) is a combined anti-diarrhea and anticholinergic drug used to treat diarrhea. Lomotil is available in generic form.



Common side effects of Lomotil are:



  • Sleepiness,
  • Dizziness,
  • A headache,
  • Fatigue,
  • Restlessness,
  • blurred vision,
  • dry mouth,
  • Nausea,
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach problems,
  • Loss of appetite,
  • Rash, or
  • Itching.

  • Stomach or abdominal pain or swelling,
  • severe nausea or vomiting,
  • mental / mood changes (e.g. mix-up, depression) or

What is Lomotil?

Dosage for Lomotil

The recommended starting dose for adults is two Lomotil tablets four times a day or 10 ml (two normal teaspoons) of Lomotil liquid (20 mg per day) four times a day. The pediatric dose is determined by the child's weight.

Lomotil can interact with barbiturates or MAO inhibitors. Lomotil can interact with other drugs. Let your doctor know about all prescription and over-the-counter drugs and supplements you use.

Lomotil during pregnancy and breastfeeding

During pregnancy, Lomotil should only be used if prescribed. This drug passes into breast milk. Ask your doctor before breastfeeding.

Get emergency medical help if you have Signs of an allergic reaction : Beehives; Difficulty breathing; Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Some side effects can occur up to 30 hours after taking this medicine.

Stop using this medicine and call your doctor straight away if you:

  • severe constipation, stomach pain, or gas;
  • persistent or worsening diarrhea;
  • watery or bloody diarrhea;
  • severe pain in the upper abdomen that spreads to your back;
  • Fever, flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling);
  • Hallucinations, seizure;
  • fast breathing, weak, or shallow breathing;
  • fast heart rate; or
  • Dehydration symptoms - You feel very thirsty, hot, unable to urinate, sweat profusely, or have hot and dry skin.

Common side effects can include:

At the therapeutic Doses of Lomotil, the following other side effects have been reported; They are listed in descending order of severity, but not frequency:

Nervous system: Numbness of the extremities, euphoria, depression, malaise / lethargy, confusion, calmness / sleepiness, dizziness, restlessness, headache, hallucinations

Allergic: Anaphylaxis, angioneurotic edema, urticaria, gum swelling, pruritus

Gastrointestinal system: Megacolon, paralytic ileus, pancreatitis, vomiting, nausea, anorexia, abdominal discomfort

The following side effects associated with atropine sulfate are listed in descending order of severity but not frequency: hyperthermia, tachycardia, urinary retention, flushing, dryness of the skin and mucous membranes.
