Acupuncture Treatment: Who Can Do It?

Acupuncture treatment requires in-depth knowledge of the human body as it can have serious side effects if used incorrectly. They can therefore only be offered by doctors and non-medical practitioners who are appropriately qualified. You should pay attention to this additional training if you are looking for an acupuncture doctor.

Acupuncture training: this is how it works

For the additional qualification in acupuncture, doctors and naturopaths must complete special training. There are various educational institutions that offer this. A distinction is made between different qualification levels for the training qualifications for doctors. The German Academy for Acupuncture (DAA) states the following: At least 140 hours of theory and practice are required for the basic qualification. As a doctor, however, you can only bill in the private health insurance sector. A specialist who has completed at least 200 hours of training may, under certain conditions, also use the statutory health insurance fund and also use the additional designation of acupuncture.

There are four further qualification levels, each of which builds on one another and entitles them to additional designations. At the end of the training there is an examination at an authorized specialist association for acupuncture. Exception: In the case of the additional designation acupuncture, which a doctor acquires after 200 hours, the respective medical association is the examination institution.

For alternative practitioners there are also opportunities to acquire an additional designation for acupuncture, which is usually very similar to the training for doctors. Naturopaths are only allowed to offer acupuncture if they have successfully completed additional training. (Acupuncture costs: what does the health insurance company pay for?)

Additional training in acupuncture: that's why it's necessary

During the additional training, the doctors and alternative practitioners get to know the scientific principles and cultural backgrounds of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which are usually not found in normal conventional medicine training. These principles form the basis of successful acupuncture treatment. This includes knowledge of the pathway system in the human body, which according to TCM is decisive for the flow of energy and also the starting point for treatments. Finding an acupuncture doctor: this is what you should pay attention to

It is important for patients to know that only doctors who are appropriately qualified and have been examined by a specialist association or the responsible medical association may call themselves a "doctor for acupuncture". If you are unsure, speak to your doctor about it. The German Medical Association for Acupuncture (DÄGfA) recommends that you only get acupuncture from a qualified doctor. In this way, you can be sure that accompanying examinations will take place and possible diseases will be detected that may have to be treated separately. (This is how acupuncture treatment works)
