Normalize anger

Anger is not unknown to Germans - a yardstick for this is how often people talk about the so-called angry citizens: inside and "permanently angry snowflakes". Yet there are many who are so well off socially that they have no reason to be angry - unless at the anger of others. These people consider themselves the embodiment of reason, surrounded by madness. For them, anger can have several causes: irrationality, ignorance, gender ... There is only one thing it cannot do: be legitimate.

On June 25th, cabaret artist Idil Baydar was a guest at Maybrit Illner to discuss police violence in Germany. The peculiarity of this talk was not only that the editors tried to make the round diverse, but also the anger that came into play when Baydar spoke of racism. The fact that thousands of people felt represented by Idil Baydar's unfiltered anger became visible on social networks during and after the broadcast.

However, the participants were not as satisfied as some of the spectators. Baydar first had to hear from Sebastian Fiedler (Federal Chairman of the Bund Deutscher Kriminalbeamter), who also sat at the table, that her anger was a "stage program". Shortly afterwards, Wolfgang Bosbach (CDU), who was involved in the discussion, was outraged about the nature of her lecture and demanded that she "raise the level".

Similar to Bosbach, some social media users found Baydar's anger to be “level”. This accusation is not only confused (because who decides what is sophisticated?), But discredits the speaker. It distracts from the arguments. Instead of going into Baydar's words, one talks about her language. You don't listen to her and justify it with her behavior.

Women experience pejorative reactions to their anger. People affected by racism as well. Idil Baydar is both. In her speech »The Benefits of Anger«, the author Audre Lorde proposes that white women reject the anger of Black women because it makes them insecure. Because they didn't know how their lives would change if they responded to angry Black women. The supposed guilt feelings of white women stand in the way of self-reflection and inner change, lead to the maintenance of ignorance and the status quo. So if we take anger seriously and respond to it, we need to change our behavior. And we are too good for that. So the easiest thing we can do is to discredit the anger.

But marginalized people need anger in order not to perish from daily injuries. And also so that they are even listened to. Margarete Stokowski wrote on Spiegel-Online regarding the taz column “All Cops are disabled”: “If Hengameh Yaghoobifarah had written an objective and calm report about the fact that migrant or queer people sometimes have a bad relationship with the police, then they would have Hardly anyone has read this text. «She is right: despite numerous reports on police violence in Germany, hardly anyone is aware of its dimensions because they are not read across the board.

Anger is essential for political work. It can be used as a drive. Collective anger from marginalized groups shows individual victims that they are not alone with their experiences, gives them strength and hope. Audre Lorde describes the implementation of anger in the sense of the future visions in word and deed as a »liberating, strengthening kind of enlightenment«. Anger leads to identifying your allies and enemies. Accordingly, the reaction to anger reveals where people stand politically.

Suppressing anger can make you sick, so the emotion needs to be given more space. Anger is a healthy, legitimate emotion and a corollary of discrimination. Anger does not go away when suppressed or sanctioned. We have to normalize anger. Germany urgently needs to stop demonizing the anger of marginalized groups just to stop listening to them.
