Can tear latex paint on paper
Paint over latex paint - you should pay attention to this!
Painting over latex paint sounds easy, but it quickly turns out to be a difficult project. Because just as dirt does not adhere to the smooth surface, other colors are also not absorbed. And even if the emulsion paint has been applied successfully, the coverage is often insufficient. With the following tips, you can still paint over the latex paint.
Latex paint can be wiped off and is impermeable to water vapor and is particularly practical in rooms with high levels of humidity, but also in heavily frequented areas. If it doesn't look like it anymore or should be replaced with emulsion paint, it becomes a problem - because it can only be painted over with another color with the right approach. However, if you have the right knowledge, you can do without the use of a professional painter.
Real latex paint
Wall paint with real latex, i.e. the addition of natural rubber, has become rare in retail because it is very expensive in comparison. Both wallpapering and painting over is very difficult on the real latex paint, but not always impossible. The most important thing here is the preparation of the subsurface.
Prepare the subsurface
If real latex is to be painted over, the old paint must first be roughened and clean. To do this, it is processed evenly with an orbital sander and then vacuumed. The more of the old paint is removed, the greater the chances that the fresh emulsion paint will hold and cover well. But even then, success is not guaranteed, especially with older and real latex paints. Instead of tackling the entire wall at once, the procedure should first be tested in an inconspicuous area.
If this procedure does not lead to the desired result, more than just the top layer of paint has to be removed.
Removal of the wipeable paint
Regardless of whether the real latex paint is used as a coating on wallpaper or directly on plaster, the procedure described above is not sufficient, the coating must be removed.
In the case of wallpaper, a spiked roller or a wallpaper hedgehog is used in the first step to make the surface permeable to water or steam at certain points. The wallpaper is then moistened with a solution of warm water and dishwashing detergent or a steam cleaner. The latex-coated paint can now be removed relatively easily with a spatula or scratches. If the wall is dry after a day or two, it can be repainted and painted.
With a latex coating directly on the plaster, the removal is much more difficult. The use of an orbital sander can lead to success. If this does not help, the entire plaster must be removed using a facade milling machine. However, even this work is associated with immense effort. As an alternative and if possible, the latex surface should simply be cleaned thoroughly with soapy water.
Paint over modern latex paint
Modern latex paints are not wall paints with natural rubber additives. Instead, they contain synthetic resin and therefore have similar properties to classic, real latex paints. This makes painting over a little easier. Here, too, it is necessary to prepare the subsurface accordingly. The only exception is painting over with real or modern latex paint. If these are chosen, a simple cleaning of the walls in advance is sufficient.
If, on the other hand, you want to paint with emulsion paint, that is again Roughening or priming the surface makes sense. To keep the effort as low as possible, a simple primer should first be tested. This is done in the following steps:
- The wall is wiped with soapy water and then with clean water.
- If the wall is completely dry after cleaning, a thin layer of emulsion paint is first applied and also left to dry. It is advisable to add a little water to the paint.
- Undiluted emulsion paint is then applied to this primer.
Even after this very simple and quick test, which should only be carried out on a small and inconspicuous area if possible, the possible success becomes apparent. If the new color holds, the rest of the wall is also processed as described. If, on the other hand, it is not liable, further measures are available.
Prepare the wall
As an alternative to the primer made of emulsion paint, a special one is to be used for latex paint with a high synthetic resin content Reason for detention advised. Here, too, you should first test on a small spot whether the application is durable.
If the primer alone is not sufficient, the surface should be sanded again in preparation. Then the primer is applied and only then is the desired emulsion paint painted over. The following tips should be observed:
- After sanding, vacuum the wall to remove dust and loose particles
- use high quality primer
- Let each individual layer dry for a long enough time before applying again
- Use quality emulsion paint and apply it several times
- When changing from glossy latex to matt emulsion paint, after priming, apply emulsion paint diluted with water before the actual painting takes place
Prevent mistakes and cracks
One of the most common problems with emulsion paint over latex paint is cracking. Especially on the glossy variants of the wall paint with synthetic resin, further paints do not hold up well. They then dry off and initially adhere, but tear open in the process and thus create an unsightly look.
This is why it is so important to apply only very thin layers, at least initially, and to let them dry for several hours at a time. The samples also help to avoid effort and errors. If cracks occur, these will usually show up on the second day at the latest with the procedure described.
Using primer and sanding off the paint completely prevents cracking. If you do not want to carry out these measures unnecessarily, you should rely on high-quality wall paints with high opacity and the thin layers already mentioned. Repainting with latex paint doesn't leave any bumps.
Paint over latex paint with latex
If you are simply bothered by the glossy surface of the latex paint or want to paint it over in a new shade, you can save yourself a lot of effort. All that is required is to use latex paint again.
The very shiny look can be changed with the use of semi-matt latex paint. Although this still has a slight sheen, it is much more subtle and therefore also has a decorative effect outside of the kitchen and bathroom.
There is little to consider when painting over with latex paint. The surface should be free of dirt and dry. It is therefore a good idea to wipe the surface thoroughly with soapy water and clear water and let it dry in the air for a few hours. Only then is the new color applied to the wall. Depending on the color difference between the old and new paint, at least two coats should be applied. When changing from dark to light, even four or more layers may be required until complete and even coverage is achieved.
Mix latex paint
Many are critical of latex colors, as these are supposedly only found in white and very few other tones. The tone of the wall color can easily be determined individually. On the one hand, there is the option of having the desired color mixed in some hardware stores and specialist retailers. The advantage here is that the exact tint can be mixed up without any problems. If another room is to be painted in the same color, repairs must be made or the original quantity is not sufficient, so no cumbersome self-mixing is necessary for an exact look. Even unsightly deviations are not risked.
If you prefer to create a unique shade yourself, you should first seek advice on the right tinting color. Latex wall paints cannot be successfully combined with all means. The choice must therefore be made on special tinting colors, preferably from the same company.
