These words caused the subjects to age psychologically because when they left the laboratory, they moved more slowly and more tired than subjects whose text did not contain any words associated with age. Such research shows that our behavior can be measurably influenced by unconscious stimuli.
It is well known that people do not passively perceive information from outside and react to it, but they construct perceptions on the background of their own experience. In an experiment (Siegel et al., 2018), test subjects had to interpret a neutral facial expression. In addition, the phenomenon of Eye dominancein which, similar to handedness, one eye is dominant and the impressions gained through this eye are preferred. In their experiment, a sequence of pixelated images was presented in front of the dominant eye, each followed by a neutral facial expression. At the same time, the subjects were also shown pictures in front of the non-dominant eye, but they showed grim, neutral or smiling faces and because of the insufficient contrast not consciously perceived could become. Then the test persons had to choose from five faces the one that, in their opinion, best corresponded to the face they had previously seen in the sequence of images. The results showed that when a smiling face was pushed under, the consciously perceived neutral face was also remembered as smiling.
At any given moment, people reach innumerable amounts of information, only a small part of which is processed, whereby it was previously assumed that insignificant information such as background noise is only poorly processed if the attention requirements are high and the background noise is irrelevant, i.e. i.e., leave no discernible trace in long-term memory. In an experiment (Hutmacher & Kuhbandner, 2019), the participants were asked to take part in an experiment that supposedly wanted to find out how well people can concentrate on a task despite distractions.
