How important are teddy bears

Psychology of the teddy bear - or, the psychological explanation of the teddy's success story

What do you see when you look at a teddy bear? At first you only see a few centimeters of plush toy, a few buttons or plastic disks as eyes, an equally simple nose and mostly an embroidered mouth. In addition, the teddy bear has soft, cuddly fur and a cuddly stature with many curves.

The question now arises, however, why such a simple toy can trigger such a wide range of emotions in children (and of course also in adults). What is the teddy's secret, what processes does it trigger in our psyche? We want to take a closer look at that here.

To understand the psychological effect, one must first look at the teddy bear through the eyes of a child. This approach differs very strongly from the facts described above. For example, a child does not see that the teddy bear only has buttons for eyes and an embroidered mouth. For a child, a teddy bear is a living being with which he is familiar and which always stays by his side. The child experiences the teddy bear as a protector, after all it is a strong animal that can independently keep away from many dangers. At the same time, the teddy bear also arouses a protective instinct in the child, which from then on has to look after and look after him.

The child can entrust all worries to his teddy bear, he will not scold him or give him advice. He just listens, gives security and the feeling of not being alone with worries and problems. With this, the teddy can do a lot more than most people can do for children.

Since children do not yet have fixed values and expectations, they are often insecure. The teddy bear at their side takes away some of this uncertainty and service as a projection surface for expectations and longings. Children often attribute skills to their teddy bears which they would like to have but which they do not yet have.

But not only for children, but also for adults, the teddy bear has a special psychological effect. Of course, he no longer serves as a companion that the adult perceives to be alive. Rather, the teddy bear for adults is an anchor in their childhood, with which they can escape the hectic everyday life as well as all their worries and problems for a certain time. If you deal with teddy bears as an adult, longing for carefree play becomes loud and you see the world with slightly different eyes. You suddenly focus on things that were important to you as a child, thereby ignoring facts that you may not want to deal with at the moment.

Adults often associate their teddy bears with a carefree time in which they were still protected by their parents and did not have to take life into their own hands. However, there are also adults who had to go through difficult times in their childhood, for whom the teddy bear was a great help. Even such people today often deal with the teddy bear, which can give them a feeling of strength and shows that even difficult situations can be mastered.
