III. Reading order Conclusion

It is highly recommended that you follow the publication order if you are new to Sword Art Online. The chronological order is only recommended if you are familiar with the series.

There are other series such as Material Editions, Leafa, Silica, Lisbeth Editions that are spread across the entire LNs. However, they are non-canon doujinshis and are not important to the plot. Therefore, they have not been included to avoid confusion.

One-part films when you watch them

The SAO Gun Gale series and the Clover's Regret series are spin-offs of the most important light novels with different characters. They are not intended to be read with the main SAO novels. So read them after Volume 6 of the most important light novels.

6. Via Sword Art Online

At the start of the game, 10,000 people had connected to Sword Art Online's virtual reality. The plot takes a turn when people realize they can't finish the game.

The protagonist Kirito, a pro gamer who was present at the SAO beta launch, plans to clear the levels as soon as possible. During his quest to end the game, he meets many friends and also a love interest, Asuna.

The plot and overall premise of the show are remarkably unique, and quite believable in a futuristic sense.
