Corporate culture is the key to equality in the workplace
Vienna, March 7, 2018 - In this year's study "Getting to Equal 2018", the consulting firm Accenture identified 40 factors in the workplace that can create a culture of equality - including 14 "cultural drivers" such as gender diversity as a top management task, flexible working hours and workplace models as well company-wide women's networks. The results of the study show which steps executives can take to accelerate equality and, among other things, specifically reduce the gender pay gap.
As part of the study, more than 22,000 employees from 34 countries - including more than 700 in Austria - were asked what influences the culture in their workplace is subject to. In-depth interviews and an analysis of previously published data on the topic complete the survey.
"Our study clearly shows that it is not only women who benefit from a corporate culture in which women are encouraged, but also men," says Michael Zettel, Country Managing Director, Accenture Austria. “The findings of the study are an urgent reminder that a culture of equality is essential for real equality between men and women. It is people, not measures, that create inclusion and diversity in the company. "
In the companies examined, in which the majority of the 40 defined factors can be found, all employees benefit:
- 93% of employees are satisfied with their professional development
- 84% of employees strive for promotion or further development
- 92% of employees aspire to a management position in their company
and both genders have higher chances of further development:
- Women are 33% more likely to reach a managerial position. It is also (163%) that women achieve a higher position such as senior manager or director.
- Men are 26% more likely to reach a managerial position. Men have a 105% probability of reaching a higher position such as senior manager or director.
Even if women as well as men benefit from an implementation of the 40 defined factors in the workplace, it gives women the greater advantages. The working environment in Austria is the same everywhere as that of those companies in which the success factors are currently most firmly anchored:
- For every 100 male managers there are 84 female managers, which means a significant increase in the current ratio of 100 to 47
- Women's earnings increased 64%, or $ 49,249 per year
- Earned a woman $ 93 for every $ 100 a man makes
The current report builds on the Accenture study from 2017, which showed how digital literacy and the level of use of digital technologies can close the gender gap in the workplace. This year's study underlines: Setting and pursuing clear diversity goals is an important step for managers who want to strengthen their corporate culture.
“The culture of a company is determined by the top management. Anyone who wants to promote women makes equality between men and women a strategic priority at management level, ”says Martina Pitterle, HR manager at Accenture in Austria. “Companies have to keep an eye on the individual, for their professional and private development. Only then do employees feel really accepted and belonging. "
The results for this year subdivide the 40 identified factors and 14 "cultural drivers" into three categories: Strong leadership, comprehensive action plan and motivating work environment. The most important findings for the Austrian market in the three categories are:
- Strong leadership: In companies whose management can be measured by whether their efforts to achieve equality are bearing fruit, women are twice as likely to be in the fast lane (33% compared to 18%)
- Comprehensive action plan: The involvement in a women's network correlates with the promotion of women. However, half of the women surveyed (49%) work in companies that lack such networks. In companies with a women's network, four in ten (44%) women use these networks. Over a third (39%) of them are part of networks that include both women and men.
- Motivating work environment: The determining factors here are an employer who trusts his employees and lets them take on this responsibility. In addition, the encouragement to be innovative and creative and the freedom to be “yourself” in the workplace.
Another result of the study found that anyone who wants to be interested in competent women would do well to focus on diversity in the workforce. So-called fast-track employees typically reach the manager level within five years and thus take the career levels faster than colleagues with similar experience. 50 percent of the Austrian employees surveyed said they knew that their company had set itself specific goals with regard to a diverse workforce. The fast-track women have a significantly sharper focus for such efforts with 68 percent.
