Tips for shopping safely on Etsy

Here are some best practices you should follow to safely shop on Etsy or any Etsy-powered website.

In general: Use your common sense. If something seems dodgy or sounds too good to be true, it's best not to risk it in the first place.

Credit card security

  • Never give your full credit card information, tax number, or password in email, Etsy messages, or on the phone.
  • When buying something in person, never say your credit card details out loud. Be sure to sign for the transaction and ask for receipt.
  • Check your credit card statement regularly to keep track of your spending and card activity.
  • Keep track of your credit card - who is authorized to use it and who has access to it.

Internet / computer security

  • Change your passwords regularly. The more complex a password, the more secure it is.
  • If you share your computer or other devices with Internet access with other people, you should always log out of all website accounts before others use the device.

On Etsy

  • Check out a store's reviews and shop policies before making a purchase. If you have any questions or concerns, please message the seller on Etsy before making your purchase.
  • If you see a credit card charge that you can't find in your Etsy account, send us a message at [email protected] Our specialists can help you research.
  • Complete your transaction in full on Etsy. In the case of payments that you have not made through Etsy Payments or PayPal, we cannot investigate or help you in any other way.
  • If you receive a suspicious email purporting to be from Etsy, please forward it to us at [email protected]
  • If you provide your own materials for a custom-made product at a shop, you do so at your own risk.
  • In certain cases, Etsy may use an external encryption service, SendSafely, to securely request additional information to confirm a transaction, such as a copy of government issued photo ID.
