Summary

Avionic buses serve both to connect the systems in the aircraft with one another and to integrate sub-systems into a higher-level system, thus enabling efficient on-board communication. Because of this central role, special requirements are placed on the bus systems used. In addition to the transmission rate, failure and interference immunity are therefore of enormous importance. In addition, in a larger network, the failure of a bus participant must not affect the rest of the network. In the following section, the basics and protocols of bus systems used in aviation are discussed and their properties are compiled. Together with the systems described in the following chapters, this lays the foundation for understanding modern avionics architectures.
