Expressway FAQ

What is the minimum speed on the expressway?

The legal basis for the minimum speed can be found in Section 18 (1) of the Road Traffic Act (StVO). You are only allowed to drive on an expressway with vehicles with a maximum design speed of more than 60 km / h.

Which traffic rules have to be observed on an expressway?

You are only allowed to enter at intersections or junctions and are not allowed to reverse, turn or stop. We have summarized further rules for you here.

How fast can you drive on an expressway?

The following applies to cars: If the expressway is outside built-up areas and if it has lanes for one direction that are separated by structural measures, there is no speed limit. The condition for this is, of course, that traffic signs do not specify any other regulations. You can find more information on the maximum permitted speed here.

What are the characteristics of an expressway?

There are quite a few in Germany different types of roads. The road traffic regulations (StVO) differentiate in this connection between motorways, roads outside built-up areas, roads within built-up areas and Motorways. The latter are colloquial more known as the expressway.

A road of this type usually has two structurally separate directional laneseach consisting of at least two lanes. The structure of an expressway is therefore very similar to a motorway.

There is one important difference, however: Motorways are not crossed by other roads at the same levelso that fast traffic can flow unhindered. Other roads are led over the motorway by means of a bridge, for example.

The Expressway however can be crossed by another street at the same level. That's why there is here, for example Crossings with traffic lightsn or roundabouts.

Both motorways and expressways are traffic areas that the vehicles enter enable rapid progress.

How do you recognize an expressway? - The traffic sign will show you!

You can easily see that your car is approaching a motor road. On the Beginning of an expressway knows that Sign with the number 331.1 down. This is a square shield that has a white car on a blue background shows.

The End of a motor road can be recognized by the traffic sign 331.2. This differs from the first shield by one thick red line running from bottom left to top right.

Also in Austria there are roads of this type. A vignette is required to drive on an expressway. That means that you are in Austria Have to pay toll. You can purchase the vignette either as a sticker or in digital form.

Who is allowed to drive the expressway? - The minimum speed must be correct!

A motor road should enable all vehicles to move forward as quickly as possible. For this reason, you are only allowed to drive on the expressway with vehicles whose design-related maximum speed of more than 60 km / h lies.

With a conventional car, truck or motorcycle, you are usually allowed to drive on expressways. But do you have one, for example Moped that is a maximum of 45 km / hso you are allowed to drive a street of this type not used.

General traffic rules that you must observe on the expressway

The on a traffic law to be observed on an expressway can be found in § 18 StVO. Road users must observe the following:

  • Maximum height of vehicle and load: 4 m
  • Maximum width of vehicle and load: 2.55 m (exception: refrigerated vehicles may be a maximum of 2.6 m wide)
  • Entry and exit only at junctions or crossings
  • Vehicles entering must give way
  • Do not turn and drive backwards
  • Do not stop or park (also applies to the hard shoulder)
  • HGVs with a permissible total mass of more than 7.5 t including trailers and tractors are not allowed to use the leftmost lane if visibility is 50 m or less due to rain or snow

There are also special rules for pedestrians regarding the expressway

What may be surprising for many readers: The StVO also provides rules for pedestrians with regard to the expressway. A Crossing such a road is only allowed in the following places:

  • Intersections,
  • Junctions and
  • other designated places.

Entering or crossing an expressway is strictly forbidden in all other places. In the event of violations pedestrians have to expect a fine of 10 euros.

Note: Pedestrians are allowed Highways according to § 18 Abs. 9 StVO generally do not enter. A fine of 10 euros is also due for this.

Expressway: How fast can you drive there?

How fast you are allowed to drive on a motor road, depends on various factors. Please note: The following speed restrictions apply of course only if no corresponding traffic signs dictate other rules.

Are you with a car or another vehicle with a maximum permissible total weight of 3.5 t traveling on an expressway, then apply no speed limits

  • on roads with one-way lanes that are separated by median strips or other structural measures, as well as
  • on roads that have at least two lanes in each direction marked by lane borders or guidelines.

On expressways that do not meet the above requirements, the Regulations according to § 3 StVO. This means that a maximum speed of 50 km / h must be maintained in urban areas and out of town a speed limit of 100 km / h applies.

The maximum speed allowed on an expressway varies according to the StVO for various other vehicle classes. The following table summarizes which vehicles according to § 18 StVO on a motor road outside built-up areas how fast are allowed to drive with lanes separated by structural measures.

Flashed on the expressway: These sanctions are coming your way!

Danger! At the end of April 2020, the most recent StVO amendment in force. This sees Fines Higher as well as stricter regulations regarding driving bans. However, the latter are currently not implemented (as of January 2021). Further Most federal states are applying the sanctions according to the old catalog of fines again. The reason for this is a formal error in the StVO amendment. In the following, we will show you both the sanctions according to the old and the new catalog of fines.

If you have exceeded the speed limit with your car on an expressway and have been flashed, you must expect corresponding sanctions. These are based on How many km / h you exceeded the maximum speed limit and whether the violation occurred inside or outside a built-up area. More detailed information can be found in the following tables.
