Private universities and private universities are booming in Germany!
More and more students are choosing to study at a private university. “More than every fourth university in Germany is privately owned. And there are more and more. The number of private universities has doubled in the last 10 years to a total of 122. In 1945 there were only four, ”calculates Piret Lees from the Association of Private Universities.
However, not all private universities also conduct scientific research - a basic requirement in order to be able to call themselves a university and to receive the right to award doctorates. According to the German Rectors' Conference, twelve of the 122 private universities have the state-recognized right to award doctorates and thus the opportunity to award the academic degree of a doctorate.
BILD shows what the advantages and disadvantages of private universities are, how much studying there really costs and what requirements you have to meet.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of private universities?
► Piret Lees: “Better supervision key, Career Center - which help professionally with the search for an internship and later specifically with the job search and application, and lower drop-out rates. The drop-out rates at non-state universities are 7.8 percent, while at state universities it is around 21 percent.
The private universities are particularly attractive for students with a professional background or for students in professional practice as well as for students from non-academic backgrounds. In particular through dual and extra-occupational, part-time and distance learning opportunities. "
► But one thing is certain: studying at private universities can be very expensive. Even if scholarships or student loans enable students with a small budget to study at private universities, the often relatively high tuition fees are not affordable for many students or their parents.
What are the requirements for studying at a private university?
Piret Lees: “You have to be willing to work hard. There is no numerus clausus, but there are separate application procedures and assessment centers to select suitable student speakers. Because in many popular courses there are significantly more applicants than free places. Nevertheless, private universities are an option even if you have not been given a place at a state. Plus, you'll likely graduate faster than a state university. "
How much does it cost to study at private universities in Germany?
Piret Lees: “The exact costs depend on the university and the course of study. They are often around 500 to 600 euros a month. "

What scholarships are there?
Students from private universities and colleges as well as students from state universities have the opportunity to apply for student loans or scholarships:
The easiest way to get money is to apply for BAföG for students. Around every third student in Germany (32 percent) receives BAföG - the abbreviation for "Education funding according to the Federal Education Funding Act". The maximum rate is currently 670 euros per month. In the next year the aid will be increased to 735 euros per month.
If it is not in-company training
If you do not want to repay your BAföG, you can apply for a scholarship from the major funding agencies. There are thirteen major funding agencies: In addition to BAföG, they also pay 300 euros a month for book money - regardless of how much the parents earn. However, many scholarships were not exhausted: every fifth foundation cannot find a suitable scholarship holder.
