Young women lost their jobs most often in the Corona year

Young women between the ages of 15 and 24 had the highest growth between 2019 and 2020; their unemployment rate rose from 7.2 in 2019 to 8 percent in 2020, as the updated figures from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Thursday, March 4, show.

In contrast, the rate for 40 to 54 year olds and for 55 to 64 year old women has changed less than in 2019. In the latter case, the unemployment rate even fell slightly.

Regardless of gender, employees between the ages of 25 and 39 suffered the most from job losses: For them, unemployment rose by 0.7 percentage points from 3.7 to 4.4 percent.

More housebuilders because of Corona?

The distribution of full-time / part-time remained the same in 2020 as in the previous year: 62.6 percent of employees worked over 90 percent, 37.4 percent less.

However, there were significant differences between the sexes: While full-time employment increased by 0.7 percentage points to 40.9 percent for women, it fell by 0.6 percentage points to 81.7 percent for men.

By 2019, full-time employment of women had steadily declined: in 1995, 47.1 percent of employed women worked 90 percent or more, in 2005 it was 43.5 percent and in 2015 it was 41 percent, while part-time employment rose analogously.

The same finding applies to men: from 1995 to 2019, the proportion of full-time working men fell from 91.9 to 82.3 percent. In 2020, the downward trend continued for them, while it reversed for women.

The unemployment rate rose more sharply for men

The unemployment rate according to the ILO (definition of the International Labor Office) rose more strongly for men than for women in 2020: by 0.6 percentage points to 4.7 percent, while it rose by only 0.3 percentage points for women and has now reached 5 percent - a value that appeared again and again in previous years.

Backslash for women in managerial positions

The hierarchical position of women has shown a slight upward trend in the last 30 years: in 1991, 12.2 percent of employed women worked in a managerial position, in 2011 it was 15.9 percent, and in 2019 this proportion reached a record 17.4 percent. In 2020 things went down again: by 0.5 percentage points to 16.9 percent. However, that was still the second highest value achieved so far.

For years, the number on corporate management has been around 4 out of 100 women who work. For men, 7.5 to 8 out of 100 employees are bosses. Of all superiors, women made up 36 percent in the first year of the corona, 0.6 percentage points less than in the peak year 2019. Since the quota of women in managerial positions reached one third in 2005, their proportion has obviously only increased very slowly.
