How do web profiles help Instagram grow

Happy Birthday Instagram: 10 years of success

The story of 10 years of Instagram

Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger founded the check-in software in San Francisco ten years agoburbnwhich was based on HTML5. Since burbn wasn't a big hit, the app was finally renamed. On October 6th, 2010 the time had come: Instagram was born. Initially, however, the app was only available to iPhone users in the App Store. It wasn't until two years later, on April 3, 2012, that Instagram appeared for mobile devices with the Android operating system.

Fun fact: the name Instagram is a combination of the words "instant" and "telegram".

In the same month of 2012, Instagram was taken over by Facebook for a $ 1 billion transfer fee. At that time, Instagram still consisted of 12 employees and so far had no earnings model. The announced purchase price of one billion US dollars set the platform's first record. Never before has such a large sum been paid to take over a digital service.

In July 2012, the short message service Twitter blocked direct access to Instagram content through the Twitter API. At the beginning of November of the same year, the so-called web profiles were activated. Users now had the opportunity to present their images publicly in the form of a personalized website. In December 2012, Instagram caused a stir again, because the announcement of controversial data protection guidelines led to major protests by users.

The creation of Instagram - the basic idea

The development of Instagram is basically based on three basic digital problems of the time. As the founders Systrom and Krieger revealed, they wanted to revolutionize the way photos were sent. Their problems included:

  • Sending photos to friends took way too long and was quite complicated.
  • Sharing photos from different platforms was difficult and also took a long time.
  • The cell phone cameras of the time took low quality photos.

With the development of Instagram, sharing photos and images has become much easier. In addition, the image quality can be significantly improved using the various Instagram filters. The concept of Instagram was thus established.

Indispensable features

With the takeover of Facebook, the founders' resources were expanded dramatically and more and more features found their way into the Instagram app. So what started out as a small photo service Instagram quickly became a large, competitive social medium.

Instagram conquers e-commerce

With the integration of various features, Instagram is increasingly becoming the dream child of e-commerce and online marketing. The photo app has great potential to attract new customers to the website and web shops. Right at the front of the race are the many “influencers” and the associated influencer marketing.

Buy now button

By integrating Instagram ads, business pages can advertise certain posts and store them with a link. The registered user is thus shown "sponsored posts" (paid advertising) tailored to their interests in the feed. If they now see a sponsored post that is linked to a link to an online shop, they can click on the button and automatically end up in the shop. For shop owners, especially in the fashion, beauty or lifestyle sectors, the “Buy Now” button has proven to be very lucrative.

Instagram stories

With Instagram Stories, advertisements can be created quickly and easily, so you can also run a sponsored post as a story. But it is also possible to create stories and incorporate swipe-up links with a minimum number of 10,000 followers. This type of approach is particularly popular in influencer marketing.

By the way: story ads are the same as advertising on Facebook and Google. If the people reached respond positively to the ad, the cost per click often goes down.

Instagram shopping

If you as a company have converted your profile into a business profile, you can mark and link the products on posts through Instagram Shopping. If the user now clicks on the post, he sees the product name and the price of the linked product. If he then clicks on the product, he will be redirected to a dedicated Instagram page and will see more detailed product information as well as a link to the online shop.

Influencer Marketing

Influencer marketing is particularly suitable for building a certain familiarity with products. Since thousands of people follow their favorite influencers every day, a brand can quickly and easily rise from being almost unknown to becoming a must-have. So that the followers buy a product even faster, it is suitable to make special influencer discount codes or free products from the brand available to the influencer. If the partnership turns out to be profitable, it can be an option to enter into an affiliate partnership.

Instagram generates trends

Over the years, not only interesting features have been added to Instagram. Challenges also developed independently, records were broken or the action and common sense of the followers were appealed to. Big headlines concerning the Facebook group also made the rounds.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge (Summer 2014)

The Ice Bucket Challenge was actually intended as a fundraising campaign for research into and control of the nervous disease ASL. It quickly turned into hype and people randomly poured cold water over their heads without really knowing the background of the campaign or donating. Even so, as of August 27, ALSA had donated $ 94.3 million to advance research.

Throwback Thursaday

On a throwback Thursday, users typically post a nostalgic picture from the past. For example, a photo from a previous vacation, photos of children, crazy clothing styles or hair. The post is marked with a #throwbackthursday or #tbt.

World Record Egg (January 2019)

With an incredible 58,848,040 likes (as of October 8, 2020, 10:43 a.m.), the World Record Egg is the most liked picture on Instagram and even knocked Kylie Jenner off her throne. For a long time it was speculated what the egg was all about and only a few weeks later, during the Super Bowl, did the Internet platform become apparentHulu had partnered with the egg to raise awareness of mental health issues.

Fridays For Future

Fridays For Future is a movement of young people on strike for climate change. Greta Thunberg is one of the initiators of the movement. Through Instagram, she was able to increase her reach and encourage many young people to take part in the demonstrations every Friday, which generated a lot of media interest.

"All in Challenge" (2020)

The "All in Challenge" is not a normal collection of donations. The Instagram community is asked to donate a sum of 10 US dollars or more in return for a raffle for, for example, a private concert by stars. It doesn't matter how much is donated, in the end a lot is drawn from a large pot and everyone has the same chance to win. Since April 14, 2020, $ 13.5 million has been raised.

Black Lives Matter

The abbreviation BLM is an international movement that campaigns against violence against People of Color and regularly organizes protests against the killing of blacks by police officers in the USA. On Instagram, the community grew through the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter and created awareness worldwide. Starting with the killing of the African American George Floyd, countless users posted a black picture or facts about raising awareness about racism to make a statement.

How Corona influenced Instagram

The corona pandemic has not only influenced people in everyday life, the coronavirus issue is also very important in the digital world. Studies have found that German young people are increasingly using Instagram to find out about the latest news. Because of this, Instagram has generated its own story stickers to draw attention to hygiene measures, distance regulations and contact bans. At the same time, however, many conspiracy theories spread, which presented Instagram with a new challenge: Protect the community from fake news! In order to shield the followers from false reports, new algorithms were created which delete posts and comments with false content. An example of this is a contribution by the singer Madonna. She spread dubious statements about an alleged cure for the coronavirus. This post has been deleted from Instagram.

What can we expect in the future?

360-degree photos, increased artificial intelligence (AI) or an even better resolution for photos and videos, these points are just three of many examples of how Instagram could develop in the future. Since the new "Reels" function was added to the IG family just a few months ago, there will certainly be some improvements in this area. Or the functions of the IGTV could still be expanded in order to perhaps become a direct competitor of YouTube. It is very unlikely that Instagram, the long-established company, will write off Facebook. With WhatsApp and Messenger, Zuckerberg has already succeeded in diversifying two similar services from one another as far as possible. And both hold up successfully!

Nobody really knows what the Instagram development team is really up to. The speculation is mounting and we are excited to see what else is in store for us.
