What is the Best Computer for Aging Parents
Media education Mobile phone, tablet, TV: How much media use is (still) good for the child?
Arrange fixed media usage times!
So that the child does not have the feeling that they always have to stop when it is most beautiful, the media usage times should be transparent and agreed in advance. For children over ten years of age, it is advisable to negotiate a weekly budget that the children can use on any day. From this age the recommends "Take a look" initiative ten minutes of media time per year of life and day. Or alternatively one hour per year of life per week.
IMPORTANT: Parents should insist that the agreed times are strictly adhered to. If everything is used up at the beginning of the week, the screen remains off for the rest of the time. "Rewarding" kids with extra screen time is not a good idea!
Keep an eye on the children's screen activities!
Parents should always keep an eye on what their children are doing on the screen. Up to the age of ten, tablets, smartphones or computers should primarily be used for games in their free time. The children are still too inexperienced to surf the net alone or to frolic on social platforms. AND: Pay attention to age-appropriate content! Independent portals like klick-tipps.net, the German Youth Institute e.V. or "Look at" help with the app selection.
Surf safely together!
First attempts at surfing, such as research for a school project, should be undertaken together. Parents should sit next to their child up to the age of seven. It does not matter whether a tablet, smartphone or PC is used for this. Parents can give children from eight years of age a little more freedom. The adults should then specify which websites can be used and have protective software installed on the device.
AND: Practice with your child what data security means right from the start and help them protect their privacy. It is also helpful to work with the children to see which content on the Internet is legitimate and which is not. This can also be done in a playful way. For this purpose, parents and children can jointly create favorites for good and safe pages in the Internet browser without advertising or cost traps.
Parents can make electronic devices a little more child-proof in a few simple steps. The access to the WLAN or the mobile network can easily be switched off on a mobile phone or tablet while playing or watching a short film. If you want to prevent paid game content from being downloaded, you can also call the network operator. In addition, so-called "filtering browsers" can be installed. This allows unwanted content to be filtered out in advance and certain, selected pages to be blocked. Similarly, the usage time of the devices can be limited.
Parents have a duty: exemplify the correct use of mobile phones
It is particularly important to show the children how to use smartphones sensibly. Anyone who constantly looks at their smartphone while eating or during joint activities cannot ask otherwise of their children. Be a good role model!
When is the first mobile phone?
When it comes to purchasing a cell phone, the general educational recommendation is: not before your ninth birthday. For younger children, an "emergency cell phone" can be useful, for example on the way home after school. A smartphone is only recommended if the child is familiar with the dangers of the Internet and knows how to protect themselves. Children reach this maturity around the age of twelve.
